- Technology and digital resources. Digital technology is integrated into the lives not only of parents but also children. Although some are fearful or at least sceptical about this use of modern technology, when used effectively, technology can support and enhance the learning experience.
Combining the physical and the virtual
Active learning occurs when the child engages with the stimuli they encounter and become inquisitive about their situation or environment. It is easy to mistake that a child’s interaction with a tablet as active learning. A child may be learning from playing a game on an iPad, but this does not necessarily mean that they are actively doing so. Depending on the game, it may be that the child is just improving their hand-eye coordination and little else.
Active learning happens when the pupil is engaged, not distracted. While a well-prepared presentation or educational app can grab the child’s attention, there is a very real possibility for distraction, to which children are particularly susceptible. Combining technology and the traditional does not mean, throwing in technology thoughtlessly in the hope that the mere exposure to technology will improve the education of children. More, it is the careful balance between the traditional and with technology to provide the stimuli and the understanding that becomes learning.
Digital technology is a great enhancement to the learning experience, but it needs to remain as it is: an enhancement. It is not a replacement for face-to-face learning. The most successful uses of digital technology occur when the device is not the focus of learning, but a resource to enhance education.
